The City Council fell one vote shy of overturning Mayor Jerry Sanders’ veto of a citywide ban against big-box grocers Tuesday, effectively killing the controversial restrictions.
The veto override failed after Councilwoman Donna Frye voted against the ban at today’s veto hearing after endorsing it last month. The council could have overturned the veto with the same five votes that were needed to approve the regulations, which would have prohibited stores of at least 90,000 square feet in size from using more than 10 percent of their space for grocery sales
We’ll have a full report on the issue later, but you can read about Frye’s change of heart here.
