Thursday, July 12, 2007 | If you retire from the navy as some sort of admiral with a cool retirement package, what do you do when you aren’t playing golf in Coronado?  You get another government job or go to work for a non-profit agency such as United Way or the Red Cross that values your name even if you aren’t very competent. After all, the only competition comes from retired police chiefs.

But as we just learned about a former “Navy mayor,”  Jose L. Betancourt,  not all high- level Navy staff have a sense of ethics.  Could there be more?  Ronne Froman springs to mind.

Mr. Betancourt was instrumental in planning how the Navy would steal the Navy Broadway Complex from the San Diego public and provide a private developer with big bucks.

Maybe he will be willing to tell the truth about the backroom deals that were done with regard to NBC now he has been knocked off his pedestal and is now an ordinary fallible Joe Q. Public.
