Here is an update on how the various San Diego employment sectors fared in June:

Leisure and hospitality was once again the big winner, increasing in size by 6,500 jobs since June 2006. Government was a distant second with 3,100 new jobs, followed by education and health with 2,400.

In the losers’ circle, we are unsurprised to find those sectors that grew the most at the hands of our late, great housing boom. Construction was down a whopping 7,400 jobs since last year, with the financial industry down 3,500 jobs and the retail sector down 1,800.

San Diego added 1,600 jobs in total, an annual growth rate of just 0.1 percent.
