RealtyTrac, a foreclosure tracker, released a new category of data earlier this week: unique properties affected by foreclosure. Previously the firm has counted the various filings in the foreclosure process in its total foreclosure activity, but critics said that artificially inflated the numbers, since the same home could be counted in more than one category, for more than one loan, concurrently.

So here’s how it turned out for San Diego County.

In the first half of 2006, 3,385 unique homes experienced some level of foreclosure.

In the second half of 2006, that number rose to 5,397 homes.

And in the first half of 2007, unique homes in foreclosure in San Diego County numbered 8,928. That’s one in every 125 households.
