Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007 | I sympathize with Pat Finn’s dismay at KPBS’s cancellation of Full Focus and the radio “A Way with Words.” However, those cancellations are not the worst misdeeds at KPBS.

Most egregious is the lack of transparency in the station’s financing. While the management was frank about the cost of the two cancelled programs, it never reveals a balance sheet or an indication of its budget, even while vigorously begging listeners to contribute.

When I travel, I listen to public stations that are far more generous with local programming than KPBS, for example, KPCC in Pasadena.

I’ve often thought that the dearth of local programming and the satellite music from 7 p.m. on indicates that we might be just as well off with a full-time satellite feed that would not demand constant fund-raising.
