Jay Goldstone, the mayor’s interim chief operating officer, stressed that Mayor Jerry Sanders remains committed to lowering Sunroad’s 180-foot building in Kearny Mesa to 160 feet in a letter to City Attorney Mike Aguirre.
Aguirre claimed earlier today that Sanders’ chief land-use aide, Jim Waring, was meeting with City Council members to advocate allowing the office tower to stand at 166 feet, which is six higher than height limit set by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Goldstone said 166-foot proposal was not directed by the mayor.
“But if the contacts that are being alleged did in fact occur, they were made without the knowledge or consent of Mayor Sanders and are completely inappropriate,” Goldstone wrote.
He continued:
The only opinion is that of Mayor Sanders and his perspective on this issue is clear and is one that has been communicated repeatedly: Sunroad must reduce the size of its building immediately to 160 feet. There will be no negotiation or compromise from this position.
Goldstone said both Sanders and Waring were unavailable to respond to Aguirre themselves because they are both on vacation.
(Update: The original version of this post erroneously quoted Goldstone as saying there would be “negotiation or compromise.” We regret the error.)
