The City Council today approved setting up sting operations to bust local merchants who sell tobacco products to costumers under the age of 18.

To pay for administrating the program, the city will charge businesses $163 per year for a license allowing them to vend cigarettes, chewing tobacco and other tobacco products. Those found in sting operations to be selling to underage customers would have their licenses suspended.

The proposal passed unanimously among the seven council members who were in attendance today. Council President Scott Peters was absent.
