Not known for holding press conferences, Councilman Brian Maienschein staged one yesterday championing the tobacco retail law that the council passed later that day.

But Maienschein didn’t know his council colleagues were going to respond to his plea so quickly.

Responding to a question about the law’s timing, he started to tick off the steps that he thought the legislation would have to travel before adoption, starting with a hearing at the council committee on public safety and neighborhood services that he leads as chairmen. Eventually it would get to council.

Then, Councilman Tony Young, who stood alongside Maienschein at the press conference, quickly bent toward Maienschein and murmured into his ear.

With his boyish grin and a quick blush, Maienschein corrected himself. He told the crowd that the council would be voting on the proposal just hours from then.
