A spokesman for Mayor Jerry Sanders said he would probably veto an everyday, round-the-clock alcohol ban at beaches in Pacific Beach, Mission Beach and Ocean Beach, as Councilman Kevin Faulconer proposed last week.
Sanders spokesman Fred Sainz said a ban on the three significant summer holidays — Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor — and the weekends that abut them would be more appropriate.
“We think a total ban is an overreaction to a limited problem,” Sainz said. “It’s an aberration that can easily be taken care of.”
Sainz said Sanders based his more tolerant stance on the basis that “Jerry goes to the beach and has a few beers from time to time.”
A Sanders veto could be overridden by the same five council votes it would take to pass a ban, but council members have changed their mind in the meantime in the past. Currently, council members said they are open-minded to the ban, with four of them appearing supportive and two sounding reluctant.
