I just spoke with Glen Sparrow, professor emeritus at San Diego State University, about Mayor Jerry Sanders’ decision yesterday to retract his veto pledge on gay marriage. Sparrow has advised the mayor on issues such as the strong-mayor transition, but has also been critical of the Sanders administration.
He echoed a sentiment we’ve been hearing frequently:
I think this is the first indication to me that this lion has a heart. I don’t think it was a staged event. I think he really did what he felt, and goddammit, if he would’ve started doing that two years ago he wouldn’t have any competition. He has good instincts, but he has bad advice.
