The Mayor’s Office has confirmed that Mayor Jerry Sanders will be meeting with the inner circle of the local Republican Party this evening.
The meeting comes on the heels of Sanders’ support of same-sex marriage, a move that angered many Republican activists because it contradicted the mayor’s campaign pledge as well as the party’s opposition to same-sex marriage. Some social conservatives have called for the party to renege its early endorsement of Sanders in the 2008 mayor’s race.
Sanders spokesman Fred Sainz said he did not know if the meeting was linked to the controversy.
“I believe it’s regarding a whole number of issues,” Sainz said.
