A new center for kids who skip class opened today on the former Gompers High School campus, promising to link truant students with counseling and academic support. It’s called the Attendance Intervention Center, and its long-awaited opening Monday followed last year’s school-board spat over where the center would be located. Gompers is its temporary home; AIC is moving to Mission Valley next month, once its new digs are renovated.

Check back later this week for a deeper look at truancy in San Diego schools.
