Los Angeles’ superintendent wants to break off 44 needy schools in our neighbor to the north into a separate school district, according to this article. (Slate Magazine had a not-so-nice name for the idea. ((Scroll down to the last post from Friday.)))

If it works, expect similar buzz in San Diego, where the idea of splitting the district along I-8 has been floated by board members on both sides of the divide. That divide would be geographic, not needs-based — but given the demographics of San Diego, could have a similar effect.
