I just got a call from Darryl Charles, the Chicken Shack guy. He’s out on the fire front in Rancho Bernardo, serving fried chicken to the firefighters.

“The fire trucks are right here; I can see the flames,” he said. “The firefighters are just getting their food and going back up to the front.”

Charles estimated he served about 200 to 300 firefighters on that front tonight. He’s the only food out there, he said.

“I don’t know how much I have left,” he said. “There’s a Taco Bell in this parking lot, but it’s closed, of course.”

In the morning, Charles said he’ll pick up more chicken and head back out to the front.
