The cause of the Witch Fire, which burned nearly 200,000 acres of rural and suburban North County, had been a mystery until this afternoon’s announcement that humans caused it.

But a CalFire spokesman scrambled around the press room at the county’s Office of Emergency Services after a briefing, saying that the cause was still under investigation.

“It was just a typo,” said Chris Anthony, a CalFire battalion chief. He said a mistake had been made when fire officials transferred the information from the most recent report onto a blown-up chart shared with reporters.

To repeat: The cause is still under investigation.
