I first spoke with reader Aaron Burruss late last week. He lived on Millar Ranch Road near Rancho San Diego and had read my story about firefighters defending the homes there last Tuesday.

He wanted to know who to thank for saving his home from the Harris Fire. Crews from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and CalFire had been stationed along the road.

He checked back in today. “Everything is good up here, and the firefighters did an amazing job,” he wrote in an e-mail.

But he returned home to an inexplicably different landscape than he left. He passed along these two photos, which speak for themselves.
