The county Republican Party have endorsed District 5 candidate Carl DeMaio and District 7 contender April Boling in next year’s City Council races.
The endorsements open the door for the candidates to benefit from the parties’ largess. Political parties are allowed to spend an unlimited amount of money — likely to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars — communicating with their members. That frees up candidates to spend their more limited campaign funds on going after those who aren’t party faithful.
DeMaio won the local party’s endorsement over two other Republicans — Bob Ilko and Mitz Lee — who have declared to run in District 5, which represents northeastern neighborhoods such as Rancho Bernardo, Mira Mesa and Scripps Ranch. Boling is the only registered Republican to have declared in District 7, which includes the eastern communities of Tierrasanta, College Area and San Carlos.
The party already endorsed Mayor Jerry Sanders for mayor. It has not taken a position yet in the city attorney’s race or the council races in District 1 or District 3.
