With huge waves pounding California’s coastline, I couldn’t resist getting up early this morning to watch surfers brave the waves at La Jolla Cove.

When I arrived around 5:30 a.m., there were a few surfers standing on the cliffs watching the waves as the sun crept through the sky. By 9 a.m., there were at least 30 people in the water, catching and, at some times getting pummeled by, massive waves.

Below is a selection of shots from the morning, including one guy who nearly got his toes to the nose of his longboard and a young surfer, Drew Littlewood, whose board was snapped in half by the wave’s force. Enjoy.
