In doing research for this year’s State of the City address, I noticed that Mayor Jerry Sanders’ previous two speeches included quotes from former Republican presidents. The first speech quoted Ronald Regan and the second cited Gerald Ford.
So, I wondered aloud this week which president Sanders would quote in this year’s speech. President George W. Bush, it turns out — though he didn’t do it by name.
In making what seemed to be an election-year plea for voters to stick with him, here’s what the mayor had to say:
To reach our goal of financial stability and restored public trust, we must stay the course. (Emphasis added.)
You’ll remember that line as the not-too-successful pitch used by Bush in trying to rally the public behind his Iraq War strategy.
