Sweetwater Union High School District, which operates middle schools and high schools in Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach and south San Diego, is estimating that state and federal budget cuts will cost the district $12 million this year.

Superintendent Jesus Gandara offered the estimate, cautioning that the ever-changing budget situation in Sacramento could alter the final figure.

“It will be a moving target,” he said.

In light of the cuts, Gandara recommended an immediate hiring freeze.
