Mayor Jerry Sanders raised $342,926 in the final six months of 2007 compared to the $185,267 that challenger Steve Francis spent on his self-financed campaign.
Campaign laws say that candidates can begin raising money a year before an election, so candidates could begin raising money in June. Sanders has raised his cash through individual $320 contributions; Francis is financing his own campaign, saying he won’t take money from what he termed as “special interests.”
