Thanks for your patience while I was gone. Looks like everyone had fun with the six words thing. I got a few good e-mails on it I hope to share when I get a moment.

For now, I wanted to alert you to a couple of things. If you haven’t already noticed, this week we’re running a series of commentaries from local thinkers about what “five things” they think San Diego needs.

This is obviously, and purposefully, vague. I asked the writers you’ll see all week to answer a simple question: What five things does San Diego need? Some will have specific policy recommendations for City Hall. Others might answer with more general notions of community enrichment. How they choose to answer that question, I think, is as interesting as what their answers are.

But this isn’t a one-way street. I’m taking the opportunity to invite you all to send in your own articles as well. What five things do you think San Diego needs? Write them up in a concise, easy-to-digest way, send them my way and we’ll try to feature them alongside the invited writers.

The first piece is up now from Gil Cabrera, a local lawyer and chairman of the Ethics Commission.
