Satisfied that the school principal had responded to bullying concerns, a group of parents at Washington Elementary decided not to pull their children out of the school today. Parents had threatened a student walkout if Principal Nestor Suarez didn’t address a series of bullying incidents at the school. Washington has suffered from division and tensions after a closed private school, Harborside, was incorporated into the public school as a program this year.

James Saucedo, a parent who spearheaded an anti-bullying protest at Washington last Wednesday, sent an e-mail to me summarizing the changes he anticipated at the school, including weekly anti-bullying classes, documentation of bullying incidents, and more monitoring during recess by volunteer parents and teachers.
