Most of us are familiar with Carl DeMaio’s work locally to reform City Hall. Obviously his experience in reviewing the city’s budget and fighting for reform is going to be key in moving our city forward, but DeMaio possesses important traits and experience that will serve our city well.
Carl DeMaio: Courage and Independence
In my last post, I mentioned how the special interests who control City Hall attacked DeMaio in 2003 for having the audacity to tell the truth about the city’s finances. Judging by the responses to my first post, those naysayers are still out there denying anything is wrong.
It is no surprise that DeMaio is principally opposed by the city’s powerful labor unions. You have to wonder why previous city politicians went along with sweetheart pension deals for the city’s unions. Perhaps it is because they feared the same bullying tactics and downright nasty and erroneous personal attacks that the unions are now using against DeMaio for advocating fundamental reform at City Hall. Undeterred by the nastiness, DeMaio continues to stand his ground. That is exactly the kind of courage we should have in a Councilmember.
DeMaio founded and helmed for eight years two successful, multi-million dollar companies. Recently, he sold both companies and continues to serve in the capacity of executive chairman. DeMaio knows what it is like to manage complex operations, create jobs, innovate processes and be accountable to customers. Most city council members have come from within the ranks of government. DeMaio will bring real business experience to the City Council for a change.
Carl DeMaio: Grassroots Community Leader
DeMaio has certainly shown his ability to address city-wide issues, but what has impressed me is the ease in which he navigates local neighborhood issues in a down-to-earth way. DeMaio has walked to more than 13,000 homes so far. In fact, my wife got acquainted with DeMaio when he knocked on my door last July in Rancho Bernardo.
As I attend community events, DeMaio has been very present like our current councilmember. I have seen DeMaio engaging the community, listening to local concerns, and building relationships. DeMaio brings the kind of responsiveness and attention to neighborhood concerns that we need in our Councilmember.
DeMaio’s experience will come in handy as he works to implement solutions to the city’s problems. Those solutions will be the focus of my next post.
