San Diego recently lost a longtime parent advocate. Walter Kudumu, executive director of the Center for Parent Involvement in Education, which aims to empower parents in southeast San Diego, passed away last week.
Kudumu was entrenched in efforts to bring technology to low-income youths, educate parents on college opportunities and preparedness, and practice anti-violence activism in the black community. In 2004, he organized a reunion of San Diego civil rights activists from the 1960s through the 1980s.
“He gave until he couldn’t go any further,” said Betty Brown, an advocate at the center.
Kudumu will be laid to rest at 11 a.m. Thursday at the New Creation Church, 3115 Altadena Ave.
