I just spoke with District 5 City Council candidate Carl DeMaio about this post last night. The San Diego Democratic Club, a gay rights group, has rated DeMaio as an “unacceptable” candidate for city council.

From the organization’s press release last night (sent after we posted the original piece):

As the SDDC’s lowest possible rating, its use is rare in any election cycle and reserved for candidates that are antithetical to LGBT and progressive rights in San Diego. Its use for a gay candidate is unprecedented in the club’s 32-year history.

DeMaio responded to the claims in a prepared statement.

“So a partisan Democrat club finds a Republican unacceptable,” he said. “Go figure. I just hope that after the election they’ll put partisan politics aside and join me in fixing the city’s financial problems.”

When asked about his support from hotelier Doug Manchester, who has reportedly spent $125,000 campaign against same-sex marriage, DeMaio replied: “You have my response. Nothing else is needed.”
