The former president of a San Diego elementary school foundation allegedly pilfered thousands from the fund by writing herself checks, Channel 10 News reported Wednesday night.

The amount allegedly stolen from the Zamorano Elementary School Parent-Teacher Foundation was unspecified. Parent Sandy Flores “will face several charges, including grand theft of personal property, forgery of checks and two counts of forgery of name,” the channel reported.

Foundations have grown in importance as schools seek alternative sources of money to blunt the impact of budget cuts. Auditing staff at San Diego Unified have expressed concern that the outside groups are susceptible to theft, and that foundation staffers lack appropriate training to prevent and detect misuse of funds.
