The City Council today voted 6-2 to override Mayor Jerry Sanders’ veto and reinstate 62 positions, mainly from the library and parks departments, as part of the $3.2 billion fiscal year 2009 budget.

The mayor used his line-item veto on the council’s restoration of the positions earlier this month. However, the council overruled that veto today by the same 6-2 vote, with Councilmen Kevin Faulconer and Jim Madaffer again voting against the budget proposal.

To fund the additional positions, the City Council is requiring the city’s downtown redevelopment department, the Centre City Development Corp., to pay an additional $2.5 million of the debt it owes the city.
