Another Democrat — this time City Council President Scott Peters — has endorsed Superior Court Judge Jan Goldsmith for San Diego city attorney.
Peters came in third to Goldsmith and Aguirre in June’s primary election. He has been an outspoken opponent of incumbent City Attorney Mike Aguirre for the last few years.
Peters is one of several Democrats who have thrown their support behind Goldsmith, who formerly served as mayor of Poway and as a Republican state legislator. The judge has also received endorsements from Councilman Ben Hueso, former state Senator Dede Alpert and community activist Rachel Ortiz.
A press release from the Goldsmith campaign quotes Peters and Goldsmith:
“The City Attorney’s office should not be about politics,” said Peters. “I am supporting Jan Goldsmith because he is a competent attorney, has a proven legal record and will use the City Attorney’s office to enforce the law, not make policy. Considering the challenges facing the City and the upcoming election of four new Councilmembers, our Mayor and Council will need professional, apolitical legal advice more than ever.”
“Scott was a formidable opponent in the primary,” said Goldsmith. “I respect the work he’s done as a councilmember and Council President, and I am grateful for his support as we move into another election season.”
