Progressive San Diego, a local interest group that works to promote progressive issues such as environmental protection and living wages in local politics, has endorsed incumbent Mike Aguirre in the race for city attorney.

A statement on the organization’s website gives the group’s reasoning for the endorsement:

Mr. Aguirre has been a leader in changing the focus and priorities of the City Attorney’s office (making it more accountable to the public), and his work on the living wage ordinance, water conservation, the environment, and providing progressive legal advice that is in the public’s interest is to be commended.

The endorsement is the first in a while for Aguirre, who has faced a barrage of endorsements from his opponent, Superior Court Judge Jan Goldsmith. In recent weeks, Goldsmith has announced backing from three City Council members, including two former city attorney candidates.

“The forces of San Diego are on the march,” Aguirre said. “We are becoming a progressive city committed to renewable energy, renewable water and environmental protection.”
