District 3 City Councilman Todd Gloria received the endorsement today of the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council, giving him major labor institutional backing as he squares off against fellow Democrat Stephen Whitburn.

The Labor Council previously issued a shared endorsement for Gloria, Whitburn and John Hartley in the primary. Gloria and Whitburn, the top-two vote getters, are now battling for the spot.

The umbrella group for more than 120 unions across two counties, the Labor Council didn’t explicitly say in its announcement today why its members chose Gloria over Whitburn, but did say Gloria’s “personal record of supporting workers’ rights earned him the necessary 2/3 votes cast by local union members.”
