The southernmost stretches of San Diego County got mixed marks in a recent report on child safety and health by the South County Economic Development Council and its partners. Compared to other areas in San Diego County, South County had the lowest percentage of babies born underweight and the lowest percentage of youth who had never seen a dentist, according to the report.

But South County had relatively high rates of domestic violence, teen pregnancy and child obesity, and several areas in South County are among the most common zip codes for youth involved in DUI crashes. The leading cause of teen death in South County is driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the report.

Unlike a parallel effort by the nonprofit Children Now, which recently gave San Diego County a ‘C’ on child wellbeing, the groups did not issue letter grades.
