The San Diego City Council voted today to oppose statewide Proposition 8, which calls for the banning of gay marriage in California.

The vote was 6-2, with District 5 Councilman Brian Maienschein and District 4 Councilman Tony Young voting to support the measure, which would add a section to the California Constitution stating: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

Council also voted 6-1 to support statewide Proposition 11, which would change how legislative districts are drawn in California. Young opposed the measure, and Councilman Ben Hueso was absent. And the council unanimously chose to oppose statewide Proposition 6, which would impose additional penalties for drug and gang-related crime.
