Local Democratic Party Chairman Jess Durfee said today that he is “saddened” by what the devil-themed anti-Stephen Whitburn mailer says about the way Democrats and the gay community are playing politics in District 3.

“This is the first time we’ve had two LGBT candidates running — a chance for our community to rise above traditional politics and run a campaign on issues and facts,” said Durfee, who is openly gay. “Then we get this piece, which was completely negative and misleading.”

The Democratic Party has endorsed Whitburn, who is running against fellow Democrat Todd Gloria for the District 3 San Diego City Council seat. Both Whitburn and Todd Gloria are openly gay. The mailer was sent out on behalf of Gloria by the San Diego Voter Education Project. Among the mailer’s funders was LGBT activist Robert Lehman.

Progressive San Diego, which has endorsed both Whitburn and Gloria, also publicly condemned the ad today. Here is an excerpt from a press release sent out by the organization:

In the strongest possible terms, Progressive San Diego condemns the recent “hit piece” against City Council District 3 candidate Stephen Whitburn. We do so not because Stephen, along with Todd Gloria, has earned our endorsement. Our condemnation stems from our deep commitment to promoting clean, honest, positive debate among all candidates for public office and keeping gutter politics out of elections.
