The Union-Tribune newsroom’s second in command, Todd Merriman, has resigned effective Nov. 7. While Merriman is not as well known as the newspaper’s editor, Karin Winner, many inside the newsroom consider him to have had as much, if not more, influence over the paper’s direction and news coverage in recent years.

In a memo to staff, Winner suggested that the sale of the newspaper is drawing closer, saying that Merriman, who most recently held the title of director of news, won’t be replaced because of the U-T’s “upcoming sale.”

Merriman’s departure continues the exodus of employees from the paper’s newsroom. Since the newspaper first cut its staff in late 2006, at least 73 newsroom staff positions have been eliminated through buyouts and layoffs — not including reporters and editors who have quit.
