Instead of giving a speech at Monday’s inauguration, new San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio showed a video of various constituents talking about issues DeMaio has promised to champion in his new position.

Those in the video want to cut “lavish pensions” and don’t want new taxes. They say a businesslike approach is needed at City Hall and stress the need for infrastructure improvements.

“Please fix all the potholes, will you?” one man says.

The video was set to Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down.” Mid-way through, the soundtrack changed to U2’s “Beautiful Day.”
