Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 | Raising, or implementing an additional, gas tax is a terrible idea. It always seems we forget the taxes we already pay are supposed to be for infrastructure. Our cost of living in San Diego is one of the highest in the nation anyway, and those who work and make the median salary or less in San Diego do not need an extra tax. Instead, let’s fire those who waste the taxes we are already “donating” to government.

We elect our council members to represent us, the public, not the other way around. They get enough in taxes to fix our streets and sewers. So far all I hear is close libraries, lay off individuals, raise taxes etc.

Here is a proposal to consider: Let’s make the positions of our council members part-time, and cut their pay in half. All they do is look out for themselves anyway (their specific districts). Their accomplishments haven’t equaled what citizens pay out of their salaries and elected them to do. In the private sector if you do not produce, you are replaced. Maybe we should make their positions like many private ones: “at will.”

A pipe dream I know, but if their positions were vulnerable, maybe they would produce.
