If one thing was missing from my story today about CalTrans’ use of water to irrigate freeway shoulders, it was a good description of the agency watering in the rain.
CalTrans admits it happens, though the agency told me that it does what it can to avoid it.
I was reporting my story for a couple of weeks, but never spotted any sprinklers spraying the road or watering during the rain. It would’ve been the kind of inefficient water use that would’ve been a perfect illustration. But no luck.
So what did I see last night on my drive home after finishing my story? That’s right, a sprinkler on northbound Interstate 5 near Mission Bay Park spraying away.
The week’s second major rainfall started five hours later.
