CalTrans was again watering the freeway shoulders after a rainstorm last night. I saw a sprinkler watering Interstate 5’s northbound shoulders near the Grand Avenue-Garnet Avenue exit last night.

It had rained most of the day yesterday.

CalTrans says that it turns off the sprinklers when rain is forecast. But we’ve documented at least five instances in the last two weeks of the agency’s sprinklers running during or immediately after rainstorms.

When I reported my recent stories on San Diego’s largest water users, Hayden Manning, a CalTrans spokesman, told me: “We take wasting water as seriously as everybody else.”
