Shortly before Mayor Jerry Sanders gives his annual State of the City address on Wednesday night, a group that helps low-income inner-city youth will give a “State of the Inner City” address.

Christopher Yanov, executive director of Reality Changers, will talk about gang-related homicides, recount the group’s Education is Bulletproof scholarship program for students who lost siblings to gang violence, and issue a challenge to city leaders. Yanov recently hosted Café San Diego on our site.

Reality Changers spokeswoman Marshela Salgado said this is the second year the group has given the State of the Inner City speech as a way to raise awareness of gang violence. Yanov’s speech will start at 3 p.m. Wednesday at 3910 University Ave. in San Diego.

Sanders’ speech, meanwhile, will start at 6 p.m. at the Balboa Theatre. You can read our coverage of the mayor’s prior speeches here.
