Gafcon is talking back to the critics who are protesting its Thursday fundraiser for a school facilities bond in light of a controversial school board move to negotiate an agreement with labor unions about construction work on the $2.1 billion project.
I got this e-mail from Yehudi Gaffen, the chief executive officer of the construction consulting group that is hosting the event:
As a San Diego headquartered Construction Consulting organization, we have since our founding in 1987 supported San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) Bond Programs. We have done this based on our belief that a quality education is the cornerstone and foundation for our children to have a successful and productive future. We have never nor are currently advocating for or against labor agreements like a PLA or PSA. These are policy matters that are decided by our elected Board Trustees.
CFEC’s picketing of Gafcon in an attempt to drive away support for the current bond program is misplaced and misguided. Our schools are in dire need of repair and modernization. Prop S was approved by the citizens of San Diego by an over 68% majority and as such deserves our support. This is about the future of our kids and not politics.
