Incumbent Assemblywoman Mary Salas said she’s supporting San Diego City Council President Ben Hueso to replace her in 2010.
“I know that Ben has told me he’s very interested in it and he has my support,” Salas said today. “I really don’t know of any other people that have the network and the visibility that Ben does or the experience.”
Salas said an opponent would have a tough time beating Hueso, who was picked as council president in December. He has filed paperwork with the state to run for Salas’ seat next year.
“I think Ben is a young man with a tremendous future,” Salas said. “It was a matter of pride to our community that he was appointed council president.”
Salas is planning to run for state Senate next year to replace termed-out Sen. Denise Ducheny, a fellow Democrat.
Salas had opened committees to both run for reelection to her state Assembly seat and for the state Senate seat, but Salas said she has since closed out the Assembly committee and transferred the money to her state Senate committee so there’s “no ambiguity” about what office she’s seeking.
“I’m definitely running for the Senate,” Salas said.
