It’s official: City Council President Ben Hueso is not running for his council seat in 2010. His spokeswoman, Michelle Ganon, confirmed that Hueso doesn’t intend to put his name on the ballot for District 8 next year.
Hueso has filed papers to run next year for the state Assembly seat held by Mary Salas.
Two people have confirmed to me that they are looking to run in District 8: David Alvarez, an aide to state Sen. Denise Ducheny, and B.D. Howard, who most recently ran Stephen Whitburn’s campaign in District 3. Howard has also filed a statement of intention to run for Salas’ seat but said he’s leaning toward running for City Council.
I’ve been inviting rampant speculation on who might run for Hueso’s seat next year. In addition to the names on these lists, I’ve also heard that others who may be interested are Albert Velasquez, vice chairman of the south region for the local Democratic Party, and Jason Wells, the CEO of the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce.
Word is that Hueso’s deputy chief of staff, Alonso Gonzalez, will likely win Hueso’s backing in the race.
