Councilman Carl DeMaio, who has until now declined to state his opinion on gay marriage, has now told San Diego Magazine that he supports gay marriage.

The U-T’s PolBlog posted the bit from the magazine’s May issue. The brief item isn’t yet up on the magazine’s website but states in part:

“As a gay man, of course I’m in favor of gay marriage,” he says. “I hope to settle down with someone myself one day. I’ve just never believed it’s a city issue, so I’ve not been vocal about it.” But with the question of endorsing gay marriage expected to come before the city council agenda again soon, DeMaio says, “I’ll vote my conscience and support it.”

DeMaio, a Republican, is one of two openly gay men on the council, along with Councilman Todd Gloria.
