An audit released today detailed some problems with missing equipment from council offices. Here’s the breakdown of what went missing:

  • District 1 (Scott Peters): digital camera (purchase date not recorded), personal digital assistant (bought December 2005)
  • District 3 (Toni Atkins): laptop (July 2005)
  • District 7 (Jim Madaffer): digital camera (February 2001), five PDAs (bought in April 2002, January 2004 and three in January 2003), two laptops (bought in December 2000 and April 2007)

City Auditor Eduardo Luna, who provided the list, said the inventory records his office obtained didn’t include the cost of the items.

Auditor Danielle Knighten said the missing equipment appears to stem not from “foul play” but from the faulty processes detailed in the audit, which she said city officials have since moved to fix.

Knighten said it’s up to the council offices — now run by Sherri Lightner, Todd Gloria and Marti Emerald — to determine if they wanted to try to recoup the expenses from the missing equipment. Auditors didn’t recommend that because of the equipment’s age.

“It was old equipment and the value of some of the equipment … it wouldn’t have been worth the time and effort for staff to go and figure out how much it would have been worth,” Knighten said.
