The names keep rolling in. Here are more of the folks who will be taking off from San Diego Unified with the golden handshake:
- Bruce McGirr, principal of Grant School and president of the Administrators Association, the union-in-the-making for principals and managers in the school district. McGirr even has a paean to his tenure by parent blogger Paul Bowers, who calls him “the human embodiment of Principal Skinner” from the Simpsons.
- Rich Cansdale, who oversees charters, magnet schools and other “choice” programs where parents pick a school. He used to be an area superintendent under former Superintendent Carl Cohn.
- Roxie Jackson, formerly the head of special education, who now directs a set of programs meant to encourage kids to behave well. Check out this article about some of her work.
- Jose Gonzales, deputy general counsel.
- Cathy Ginsky, assistant to the superintendent, who actually left and took the last golden handshake in 2003 and then gave it up to return to the school district. Among the many golden handshakers who returned last time, Ginsky was the only one who relinquished the bonus when returning. Others returned as consultants .
- Gamy Rayburn, budget guru. After two years of budget crises, I would probably be ready to leave too. You’ll see her name in a lot of my old budget stories explaining the labyrinthine world of school finance.
- Willy Surbrook, director of labor relations.
- Wendell Bass, principal of ALBA School, who once oversaw Lincoln High before it was closed and rebuilt. He’s an outspoken guy, especially on issues of race and equity, and I’ve quoted him a lot.
