The state Air Resources Board has fined San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System $47,750 for failing to inspect its diesel bus fleet.

MTS is required by state law to inspect their diesel buses to ensure their engine emissions are meeting state air quality standards. The local bus agency didn’t do it on time.

Rob Schupp, an MTS spokesman, said the state requires annual tests but that MTS had scheduled tests every 25,000 miles. Some buses didn’t hit that requirement and didn’t get inspected, he said.

“When they did test, they passed the emissions test,” Schupp said. “We’ve tightened up our processes.”

MTS runs 101 diesel buses in its 551-bus fleet. The majority of the others run on natural gas.
