Tuesday, June 23, 2009 | I am dismayed that anyone on the school board finds any merit in this idea. The idea defies logic and good business sense for the district.

I am very strongly opposed to the proposal to provide $20 million, or even one red cent, for the downtown library! This boondoggle has gone on long enough. The whole schoobrary idea is an end run by the downtown business interests and developers, supported by the San Diego “Taxpayers” Organization, to push a project that will benefit only them. Any funds the city has for such a facility should be spent to repair existing branches. There are leaky roofs and hellacious parking lots at our branch libraries that should be repaired. The only ones who will benefit from a downtown library are the developers.

It is absurd to even consider such a thing when the district is making drastic cuts across the board.

It is time for our leaders to screw their heads on straight and show some fiscal responsibility.
