Wednesday, July 01, 2009 | Think the city is cutting back on employment? That’s the impression city administration tries to create, but if you’ll check the city web site, you will find openings in 85 categories, including four levels of library assistant, management trainees, accounting, clerical, engineering, lifeguards, police officers, etc.

Curiously, no openings are shown for firefighters, despite all the early retirements to preserve DROP and medical benefits. Looks like the guys at the firehouses will have to suck it up and work even more overtime, which isn’t too burdensome given the 7 day a month normal work schedule, so stand by for new members to the 150k club.

P.S. Did you see that the U-T claims that, during calendar 2008, city employment actually increased by .7%. That’s not a lot, maybe 70 bodies or so, but it sure puts the claims of all the cutbacks into perspective.
