The USA Rugby Sevens tournament, which has been hosted at Petco Park since 2007, will move to Las Vegas in 2010.
A message on the USA Sevens website says the relationship “will be a multi-year commitment.” It describes Las Vegas like this:
Home to the world’s most celebrated hotels and renowned entertainment destinations, the electrifying atmosphere of Las Vegas complements the dynamic Sevens experience and is a perfect fit with the Tournament’s international appeal.
Local tourism officials often talk about the challenges of competing with the city for visitors. The Sevens tournament hosts teams and fans from 16 different countries.
I had the chance to photograph the tournament this year and it seemed to be drawing a more loyal following in San Diego.
